The app

Everything you need to train,
right from your phone.

Project Phoenix focuses on the training experience: fast Bluetooth pairing, reliable resistance control, flexible workout modes, detailed history, and safety-first controls that stay available even when you train without an internet connection.

Build routines, launch freestyle sessions, track every rep, and review progress across mobile and the optional Phoenix Portal. The app is free on Android and iOS, requires no account, shows no ads, and keeps the core workout flow local by default.

Everything it does

A complete trainer in your pocket

Far more than a remote control — Project Phoenix is a full strength-training platform that just happens to also drive your hardware.

Full machine control

Rock-solid Bluetooth connection with a hardened, reliability-tuned BLE engine and built-in diagnostics.

  • Set weight, mode & configuration from your phone
  • Motion-start detection — won't count until you move
  • Stall detection & automatic set end
  • Live BLE diagnostics & fault decoding

Real-time intelligence

Live load, velocity, position and power streamed straight from the machine, rep by rep.

  • Velocity-Based Training with live zones
  • Auto-end when bar speed drops off
  • Automatic, machine-accurate rep counting
  • Concentric / eccentric force breakdown

Build & program

A 572-exercise library and a routine builder powerful enough for real periodized programming.

  • Supersets with drag-and-drop & per-set rest
  • % of PR scaling & AMRAP sets
  • Multi-week training cycles
  • Routine folders & bulk weight adjust

Track everything

Automatic PRs, estimated 1RM and Smart Insights that actually understand your training history.

  • Phase- & mode-specific personal records
  • 1RM estimates (Brzycki / Epley)
  • Streaks, calendar & achievement badges
  • Smart Insights, trends & activity replay

Your data, your way

Local-first by design. Turn on optional cloud sync only if you want it — across phones and the web.

  • Optional cloud sync via Phoenix Portal (premium)
  • Multi-profile for shared households
  • Apple Health & Health Connect
  • CSV import/export (Strong & Hevy)

The "Safe Word" stop

A safety feature the original app never had: just say the word and the machine lets go.

  • Voice-activated emergency stop
  • Quick 3-rep calibration to your voice
  • Hands-free when a lift goes wrong
  • Works on Android & iOS
Train your way

Seven ways to move weight

Every resistance profile the machine supports, plus a true grab-and-go freestyle mode.

Just Lift

Grab the handles and go. Optional auto weight, built-in rest timer with pause and +30s.

Freestyle

Old School

Classic constant resistance training — the dependable foundation for building strength.

Strength

Pump

Higher-rep resistance tuned for muscle pump and hypertrophy-focused finishing work.

Hypertrophy

TUT

Time Under Tension — controlled tempo that keeps the muscle loaded through the whole rep.

Tempo

TUT Beast

An intensified Time Under Tension profile for when standard TUT stops being a challenge.

Tempo+

Eccentric Only

Negative-focused overload that loads the lowering phase for serious eccentric stress.

Eccentric

Echo

Adaptive progressive loading across four levels — Hard, Harder, Hardest and Epic — with 0–150% eccentric control.

Adaptive · 4 levels

+ Per-set control

Mix modes, warm-ups and Echo levels per set inside a single routine for full programming freedom.

Routines

Heavy weight, hands full? Just say the word.

Born from a community feature request ("DAMN DEVIL STOP"), Project Phoenix added a voice-activated emergency stop you calibrate to your own voice in three reps. If a lift goes sideways and you can't reach a button, your safe word drops the load. It's the kind of owner-driven safety touch that only a community project ships.

Phoenix Portal · premium web companion

Take it further on the web

Want your training in a browser and synced across devices? Phoenix Portal is the optional premium companion at phoenix-portal.com. Turn on cloud sync to review history, analytics and progress online, sign in with Google or Apple, and keep multiple devices and household profiles in step. The app itself is completely free and fully usable without it.

  • Cloud sync built for huge workout histories
  • Web dashboards & deeper analytics
  • Sign in with Google or Apple, sync every device
  • Optional — the free app is 100% usable offline

No tricks

Local-first. Free. Honest.

We rebuilt this for the community, not for a business model. Here's exactly how it works.

🔒 Private by default

Everything works offline with no account. Your workouts live on your device. Cloud sync is strictly opt-in, and only sends what you choose to sync.

🆓 Completely free

The app is 100% free — every feature, no ads, no in-app purchases, nothing gated. The only premium piece is the optional Phoenix Portal on the web, which adds cloud sync and dashboards.

🌍 Built in the open

Developed transparently on GitHub with public release notes and an open issue tracker. Translated into English, Dutch, German, Spanish and French.

Keep the fire going

Fuel the roadmap

Project Phoenix is a volunteer effort funded entirely by the people it helps. If the app makes your training better, Ko-fi donations help cover development, testing, and platform costs.

Under the hood

For the tinkerers

One Kotlin Multiplatform codebase ships to both Android and iOS. Curious how it talks to the machine?

Modern, shared stack

Native performance on both platforms from a single shared core — UI, business logic, database and BLE all written once.

Questions

Good to know

Is the app really free?

Yes — the app is completely free: every feature, no ads, no in-app purchases. The only paid part is the optional web Phoenix Portal (cloud sync + dashboards), which you never need in order to use the app with your machine. Donations are welcome but always optional.

Which machines work with it?

The V-Form Trainer (VIT-200, 200 kg) and Trainer+ (220 kg / 110 kg per cable). The app connects to either over Bluetooth Low Energy.

Do I need an account or internet connection?

No. The app is fully functional offline with no account. Cloud sync via the premium Phoenix Portal and sign-in (Google/Apple) are entirely optional and only used if you turn them on.

Is my workout data private?

By default all data stays on your device. If you opt into cloud sync, only the data you choose to sync is sent to your private account. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Can I bring my data over from another app?

Yes — you can import and export workout data in Strong and Hevy CSV formats, and sync sessions to Apple Health or Health Connect.

Who builds Project Phoenix?

Project Phoenix is built by an independent community team focused on local control, workout programming, training history, and optional sync.
